Blocks

The block is the whole point

Compressed to 1,000–1,900 PSI. Fireproof, insect-proof and beautiful. Here's every size we make, how to choose a type, and how to get them.

Block sizes

Every block can be made 2" to 4.5" thick (interlocking: 3" to 5"). The size you pick decides which machine makes it.

Stabilized or un-stabilized?

The single biggest decision after size. The short answer: if the wall will see rain, stabilize it.

Un-stabilized Pure earth

Natural earth only: clay, sand, aggregate and silt.

  • Lowest cost, nothing added
  • Goes on the wall straight from the machine, no curing
  • Ideal clay content: 20–35%
  • Must be protected from weather by deep porch roofs, or a lime, earthen, stucco or paint finish

Stabilized ~8% cement or lime

About 92% earth and 8% cement, lime or fly ash.

  • Fully water resistant
  • As strong as, and denser than, traditional masonry
  • Ideal clay content: 15–25%, with more sand (cement bonds with sand)
  • Needs to cure before laying. Works anywhere other masonry does, including basements

Our recommendation: use stabilized blocks. For most projects, stabilized is the safer choice. Use it for:

  • Any exterior wall that will see rain, or that you want to leave exposed
  • Foundations, stem walls, basements and anything touching the ground
  • Outdoor kitchens, fire pits, garden walls and benches
  • Humid or rainy climates, or any time you're not sure

Pure earth makes sense for interior walls, or exterior walls fully protected by deep porch roofs or a plaster finish. Many builders combine the two: AECT's Building Off The Grid home used 6,500 stabilized exterior blocks and 3,000 un-stabilized interior blocks.
